biden to lead an inter-agency task force to develop a policy response to the tragedy at sandy hook saying he cannot do it alone. >> ultimately if this effort is to succeed, it's going to require the help of the american people. it's going to require all of you. mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, pastors, law enforcement, mental health professionals, and yes gun owners standing up and saying enough on behalf of our kids. >> the president reiterated that he'll use whatever powers his office holds to prevent another tragedy like newtown. and his choice of vice president biden signals a robust effort to confront america's foremost gun lobbyists. >> the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. and i would expect that they've been impacted by this as well. and hopefully they'll do some self-reflection. >> indeed. self-reflection is something joe biden's recommended as well. confronted by a particularly zealous gun advocate during the youtube presidential debate in 2011. >> tell me your position on gun control as myself and other americans really want to

from sandy hook, that adam lanza thought his mom cared more for kindergartners she volunteered with last year than they did for him. he may have gone to their first grade classroom on friday when he found his mom was trying to send him to a mental institution. this marine told foxnews.com, quote, from what i've been told, adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and her plans to have him committed. adam was apparently very upset about this he thought she just wanted to send him away. from what i understand he was really, really angry. think could have been it. what set him off? court records are sealed but a senior law enforcement official told foxnews.com, that, possible anger about future mental health treatment is looked at as a possible motive, jenna. >> we'll wait for confirmation from all of that. we'll continue to talk about the killer and potentially the motives there. let's talk about the victims as well. what can you tell us about the funerals taking place today? >> reporter: there are some funerals taking place right now, jenna. up the rode the

of the sadness in newtown and sandy hook is they did everything they could. nobody opened the door for the guy. they did everything in their power and still this happened. in the immediate aftermath on friday of this horror, everyone talked about gun control pretty quickly, and people said, you know, we ought to do something, but nothing is going to change. the answer was because of the political power of the nra. i guess i would ask you, joe, as someone who has held office, what are the political costs of crossing the nra? how serious is it? mayor bloomberg has called that a complete myth. what's the problem? >> i can tell you in 1994 i ran, and nobody knew who i was. the nra worked overtime to defeat me because they didn't know me. they knew a state legislator they wanted in, and they worked overtime and spread lies about me. things that were factually false and went after me aggressively and i got 62% of the vote. i think they're very powerful. who knows maybe 3, 4, 5% of the 38% of the vote my opponent got maybe it was people that believed the stuff that the nra sent out. it all depends. y

sandy and what happened up in newtown. governors really are the responsible adults. they have to take care of their people. so in taking care of the people in maryland, what do you think is the most important thing? deal with the gun -- the issue of the semiautomatic weapons, the assault rifles, dealing with the high-capacity gun clips, the ammunition clips, or the mental illness piece, or the violent culture piece? what can you go after in a month? >> you have to go after all of those things simultaneously. school safety an issue. mental health access is an issue. but there is no reason why we should have military assault weapons any place but on the battlefield. and most of the hunters that i know agree. i mean, law enforcement is a piece of this. governor rendell who i know you're going to be talking to in just a second, he and i had the highest title in the land, that is mayor. we had to order police officers to go into homes and oftentimes they'd bring out assault weapons, these combat weapons that had no place in a civilized society. for their safety, if only for their safety, w
